At the first board meeting for Friends of Barker Field, the problems with water and mud around the watering area were discussed and the discussion posted on the Barker Field Regulars group at Yahoo. This has been a long-standing problem since soon after the water line was run by the Dept of Parks, from the nearby shelter, across the parking lot, and to a faucet above a big bowl. The _deliver_ of the water is fine unless it's freezing and it's turned off. But, there was not much done to facilitate the drainage of the gallons and gallons of water that leave the bowl without going through any dog at all.

The morning regulars responded. Stan Horner (?I'm not positive) got together a proposal for a dry well and drainage field, and Vice-President Laura Fisher and Stan got it approved by Rocky with the Dept of Works. The estimate was about $200 for the distribution box, drain pipe, gravel, rock, and other materials.

After some discussion on Barker Field Regulars, Stan and a pack of volunteers appeared and started digging. As the materials were delivered they were worked into the project, which was closed up the same day it started. Actual material cost ended up being closer to $300.

The result has been NO MUD & MUCK in the watering area, no matter how many dogs paddle in it, and no matter how many times dog owners dump bowl.

Many thanks to all that made this, the first phase of the No Muddy Dogs campaign a success. Phase Two is next...
